Dili, May 5th, 2021 – His Excellency the Prime Minister, Taur Matan Ruak, received this Wednesday, a phone call from his Australian counterpart, Scott Morrison, in which he reiterated Australia’s support and solidarity towards Timor-Leste in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic and the natural disasters that happened on April 4th.
During the 27 minutes of conversation, the Heads of Government of these two countries analyzed in more detail the relationship and cooperation between the two countries for the future, with the Australian Government affirming that it is ready to support Timor-Leste in any area that the Government needs.
Prime Minister Taur Matan Ruak said, “First of all, I would like to thank the Prime Minister for the phone call. It has been more than a year since our last conversation, on April 27th last year. It is a pleasure to hear from him again. Taking this opportunity, I would like to express my sympathy and deepest condolences to the families of the victims of COVID-19 and other natural disasters in Australia.”
The Prime Minister also took this opportunity to, on behalf of the Government and People of Timor-Leste, deeply thank the Australian Government and People for their support and solidarity.
Last March, the Chief Executive wrote an official letter to his Australian counterpart, requesting assistance in terms of vaccines, for which Timor-Leste also has the support of the COVAX system.
That official letter received a positive response from the Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, who stated then that the Australian Government was ready to support Timor-Leste’s vaccination program. Following that request, the first package of AstraZeneca vaccines arrived in Dili this week, with 20 thousand doses.
The Government of Timor-Leste has already set targets to immunize 80 and 90% of the country’s population with this vaccine by the end of the year. END/M-PMO
