Dili, September 8th, 2020 – His Excellency the Prime Minister, Taur Matan Ruak, accompanied by the Minister of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, Fidelis Manuel Leite Magalhães, this Tuesday, at the Government Palace, held a meeting with the Minister of Defence, Brigadier General Filomeno da Paixão de Jesus, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Mrs. Adaljiza Albertina Xavier Reis Magno, to learn on the rehabilitation progress of Baucau airport.
The Council of Ministers, on January 15th, 2020, approved a resolution, giving powers to the Minister of Defence, assisted by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, the Minister of Transports and Communication, and the Minister of Public Works, to enter into an agreement with the United States of America, aiming for the Baucau airport rehabilitation, but, unfortunately, the process has been slow, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Even so, during the negotiations with the USA, it was already agreed that the United States will finance 10 million US dollars to rehabilitate the Baucau Airport, for multi-function, such as warehouses, humanitarian aid, and maritime security monitoring on the South Coast. This airport will also be used by the F-FDTL aerial component when established.
“Mr. Prime-Minister call us to discuss the development of our air force and also our marine force. We talked about the memorandums of understanding that it will be held with the United States of America, on how we will develop our airport in Baucau and also on how to control maritime security on the south coast”, said the Minister of Defence to the press, after the meeting.
At this meeting, the Chief Executive asked the Minister of Defence and Minister of Foreign Affairs to prepare the formal agreements, in order to start the rehabilitation process. END
