Prime-Minister Ruak attends the meeting of the State Council and the Superior Council for Defence and Security on the extension of the State of Emergency for the tenth time

Dili, January 26th, 2021: His Excellency the Prime Minister, Taur Matan Ruak, attended, this Tuesday, in the meetings of the State Council (SC) and the Superior Council for Defence and Security (SCDS), which took place sequentially, at the Presidential Palace Nicolau Lobato, and which were chaired by His Excellency the President of the Republic, Dr. Francisco Guterres Lú Olo, to analyze the Government’s deliberation regarding the request for the extension of the State of Emergency, for the tenth time, related to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic worldwide, and also in Timor Leste.
In both meetings, the members of the SC and the SCDS gave their opinions on the importance of the state of emergency’s extension, suggesting to the Head of State to request authorization from the National Parliament to declare the State of Emergency for the tenth time.
The Council of Ministers, at its meeting on January 20th, 2021, decided to propose to His Excellency the President of the Republic, Francisco Guterres Lú Olo, the renewal of the State of Emergency, for another 30 days. Given the worrying changes in the epidemiological situation, and the proliferation of registered cases of COVID-19 contagion, both regionally and globally, and to avoid and neutralize the risks of spreading the SARS-CoV-2, the Government proposes to the Head of State the renewal of the State of Emergency, thus allowing the suspension or limitation of an international movement, circulation and residence and resistance rights.
The ninth State of the Emergency period began on January 3rd, 2021, and will end on February 1st, 2021.
Update of COVID-19 cases:
According to the data from the National Commission of COVID-19, of the Ministry of Health, on January 25th, 2021, there were 17 positive cases of COVID-19 in Timor Leste, of a cumulative total of 67 cases since the emergence of the pandemic, detected first in Timor Leste in March 2021, and so far there have been no cases of death.
