Prime Minister Taur Matan Ruak takes part in the National Leaders meeting with the President of the Republic to find a way out of the political impasse
- The conclusion presents three points
Dili, February 10th, 2020: His excellency the Prime Minister, Taur Matan Ruak, this Monday, took part in a meeting with the National and Historical Leaders, held by the President of the Republic, Dr. Francisco Guterres, Lú Olo, in the Nicolau Lobato Presidential Palace, in Dili, with the aim to find a way out for the domestic political situation (political impasse), which our country is facing, related to the rejection of the General State Budget for 2020, in the National Parliament, on January 18th, 2020.
The personalities attending the meeting were the former President of the Republic and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Dr. José Ramos Horta, the former Prime Minister, Dr. Marí Alkatiri, the current F-FDTL Chief of Staff, Major-General Lere Anan Timor and Roque Rodrigues, as Former Leader of the Resistance. Former President of the Republic and former Prime Minister, Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão didn’t attend the meeting.
From the meeting, which lasted about 7 hours, from 09:30 am to 16:00 pm, three key points must be highlighted as conclusions: early elections are the last recourse, political parties represented in the National Parliament must start a negotiation movement towards the political impasse resolution and, until a solution is found, the current Prime Minister, Taur Matan Ruak, will remain in office, as the Head of the Government.
“The President of the Republic was pleased to invite our historical or national leaders, namely those present here today, as well as Mr. Xanana Gusmão, to participate in this meeting, so that I could directly hear their opinions on the current political situation. So, today we hold this meeting, and the three key points to remember from the meeting are:
- First, early elections should be seen as a last recourse;
- Second, all political parties represented in the Parliament must initiate political movements, presenting their opinions and wishes, in order to seek a solution for this political impasse.
- Third, His Excellency, the current Prime-Minister, will remain in office, as the Head of the VIII Constitutional Government, until a solution is found for the political impasse our country faces” said the Head of State to the journalists, after the meeting with the Historical and National Leaders.
In this declaration, the Head of State voiced his satisfaction because the national leaders accepted his invitation to sit together and share their ideas about the internal political situation that currently the country faces. According to the President of the Republic, this dialogue aims to seek the best solution for the country, through the important opinions from all leaders, so that we could overcome this situation.
We recall again that, after the General State Budget for 2020 rejection, in the National Parliament, on January 18th, 2020, the Prime Minister Taur Matan Ruak, on January 20th, 2020, immediately requested a meeting with the President of the Republic, to tender his resignation, so that the President of Republic could make a decision regarding his position, and, as a Head of Government, he is ready to accept it and support it.
After that, the Head of State began a round of dialogue with all political parties represented in the National Parliament, with the Civil Society, Catholic Church and other Religious Convictions, with Jurists and the Veteran Council, to hear the different points of view about the current political situation.
